Retaining Walls

Most Wasatch Back lots are on a grade, and a usable yard usually starts with holding the hill still. Block, boulder and poured walls, built with drainage behind them — a wall without drainage is a wall with a deadline.

Decks and Deck Stairs

Deck-to-yard stairs, landings, and railings that meet code. Built for snow load, which is a different calculation up here than it is in the valley.

Slope and Drainage Work

Regrading, swales and the water management that decides whether everything else lasts. On a Wasatch Back lot, spring runoff is the thing that undermines footings and washes out step bases.

What Wasatch County Does to a Yard

Snow, and a lot of it. Heber and Midway sit around 5,600 feet; Park City higher. Everything gets built for load and for where the snow goes when it slides off.
A short season. The ground is frozen for a good part of the year. Scheduling matters — the work that needs open ground has a window, and it is not a long one.
Spring runoff. Snowmelt moves a lot of water through a sloped lot in a short time. It undermines footings and washes out the base under steps.
High-altitude UV. It is hard on untreated wood and on anything with a coating.
