Sugar House lots are narrow and the houses sit close together, so a fence here is almost always about privacy rather than boundary. Getting it right is less about the material than about the three things that make this neighbourhood awkward to fence: the property line is usually shared, there is often an alley at the back, and there are mature trees whose roots decide where a post can actually go.

Privacy on a narrow lot
On a typical Sugar House lot there is not much distance between your windows and the neighbour's, which changes what a fence has to do. A six-foot solid fence at the property line does more here than the same fence on a quarter-acre in the suburbs, and it is worth thinking about where you actually need the height — often it is one side and the rear, not the whole perimeter.
Cedar is what we most often put in around here. It suits the brick bungalows and Tudors, it weathers to grey rather than going green, and it takes stain if you want to keep the colour. Treated pine costs less and does the same job structurally; it just looks newer for longer and older sooner.

The alley line
A lot of Sugar House blocks have a rear alley, and fencing onto one has its own considerations: where the gate goes if you park back there, whether the fence needs to allow bin access, and how much of the run is actually on your line rather than the alley easement.
We confirm the line before setting a post. On lots this tight, a fence built to where someone thinks the boundary is rather than where it is becomes an expensive conversation with a neighbour later.
Mature trees
The trees are one of the reasons people want to live here and one of the reasons fencing takes longer. Roots decide post placement, and there is usually a stretch where the post cannot go where the spacing says it should.
Two options: shift the spacing and carry a slightly longer panel, or use a surface-mount detail where digging would damage a root worth keeping. We will tell you on site which the tree can take. Building a fence that kills a mature tree two years later is not a saving.
Sharing the line
Most Sugar House privacy fences sit on a shared boundary, and the conversation with the neighbour is part of the job. Worth settling before we start: which side the finished face goes on, whether the cost is being split, and who is maintaining it afterwards.
